Treat Yourself with Self-care Today using Yoga

Months into the pandemic, and we are still uncertain where the light at the end of the tunnel may be. Does this thought send chills up your spine more than the haunting decorations for the approaching Halloween holiday? If so, you are not alone. Pandemic stress, as it is being called, affects all of us, but in different ways. How can you know if you are experiencing it? This article “The Dog Days of COVID-19: How to Fight Quarantine Burnout” describes some of the symptoms as:

  • Lack of motivation

  • Physical exhaustion

  • Irritability

  • Uncharacteristic mood states

  • Disconnecting from others

  • Not enjoying things you know you love

Experiencing these? No worries as the article also describes some ways we can improve our symptoms. Two of them are getting adequate exercise and taking care of ourselves. Yoga is a great way to do both.

This article on “Invest in Yourself – The Importance of Self Care and Well Being” explains self-care as a way to take care of our physical, emotional, and mental health. It can sometimes be easier to take care of others before ourselves, but self-care is not selfish. Self-care is necessary to prevent health issues. This study showed that nurses, who frequently neglect their self-care and have high levels of burnout, were able to reduce burnout and improve their self-care compared to the control group by practicing yoga for eight weeks.
